First and foremost, a high fiber diet, but low in fat is the most recommended for diabetic patients. In this diet, you stay away from saturated fats and limit the amount of sugar consumption. Saturated fat can be found on butter, lard and dairy products such as meat, cream, cheese and chocolate.
One major source of carbohydrates in our diets is bread. Carbohydrate is definitely an important source of energy, stamina, vitamins and minerals. Carbohydrate also provides fiber that helps stabilize blood sugar levels. Such foods that contain fiber are beans, peas, potatoes, corn, pasta, oats, wheat and barley. A good choice for fiber is whole grain products because it takes a long time for your digestive system to break down this component. This will keep the body from releasing rapid bursts of sugar.
Next are vegetables. Vegetables should be undeniably included on your list of what to eat for diabetes. Such vegetables to include are green leafy vegetables that include spinach, tomatoes, lettuce, carrots, broccoli, zucchini, cabbage and cucumbers. A three to five servings a day is recommended on a daily basis. It is a good option also to mix up raw and cooked vegetables.
Last but not the least is the consumption of fruits. But be careful in indulging with fruits too much because fruits contain carbohydrates and natural sugars. Remember that we are limiting our intake of carbohydrates and sugar to stabilize a normal blood sugar level. Well, it is a good idea also to mix fruit with a protein before doing some exercise. Make sure that the canned fruits you buy are packed in with unsweetened fruit juice. The requirement for diabetics is two to four servings of fruit every single day.
