I was a lucky in my early years of growing up because I could eat anything I want without thinking of any diet specification. I used to eat anything I want, and my favorite was ice cream and all sweet foods. These are my weakness, once I see them I have to buy them.
Until I grow older, until to date after my retirement that I suffered a high blood sugar, a sign for diabetes. I could not believe that would suffer the being affected with diabetes, because I'm active in all outdoor activities, I don't want to stay idle, I want to be on the go. I want to always perspire every time I work on physical activities.
All the carb I took are easily consumed due to my being so active physically. It was only this time when I was already affected with diabetes, that I have to consult a doctor, to find out the causes and the possible solution to avoid being totally a diabetic all my life
And the result, it was found out, I was positive. I was totally shocked why I was a victim of the disease, knowing that it was at my later years of my life that diabetes entered into my life. It was my retirement age already, at 61, I was diagnosed as diabetic?
But instead of frustration and procrastination, I followed the doctors advice. Until now, it's about 2 years after being diagnosed, that I could cope up the pressure and some myths about the dangers of diabetes.
Based on my doctors advice, I have enumerated some pointers that would help you get rid of diabetes
1) Exercise. This is what my doctor advised me. At least 3-5 times a week of simple exercise. I used to do early morning biking about 6 kilometers 3 times a week. If I don't bike, I used to go on a distance walk about 2 kilometers 2 times a week. I have to perspire heavily after each of these simple routine exercises.
2) Minimize salt, no sugar diet. My doctor advised not to eat food with salt, but she said, add salt just to taste in your diet. From that time on until now, I could eat vegetable without any salt at all, I'm already used with no salt. My non-fat milk has no sugar at all. It's already usual for me to drink my milk without sugar.
3) Fruits. My doctor told me not to eat more than 2 ripe big bananas, guavas, mango, and other big fruits. For big mango, I usually divide it for one meal setting and the other for the next meal.
4) Vegetables. My doctor advised me to eat all kinds of vegetables. There's no limit to eat vegetables, you can eat them any time for all the meals, but you've to limit the salt.
5) Vegetable oil. My oil is non-saturated oil. I don't use the coconut oil or palm oil, most often I use Minola oil which is a 0 carbohydrates oil.
6) Meat. I usually eat meat, but limit to pure lean meat about a match size, just enough to satisfy my desire for meat.
7) Medicine. During my first year of medication, I have 4 kinds of medicines; Metformin, Sinvastatin, Aspilet-EC, Imidapril HCl. After one year of continuous medication, these medicines were reduced to 3 until now.
8) Laboratory test. Every 3 months I have to undergo some laboratory test for my blood sugar level, Cholestrol, and carbohydrate. Until now, there was no negative findings that came out for these series of laboratory test
With my doctors advise, I am strictly following what see says, and I am confident, although my diabetes will not go away, but it can be managed and would relieve me from doubts and procrastination.
I wrote this article to share it to those people suffering from diabetes not to be depressed, but rather be positive and always follow your doctors advise.
